English version

From 5 to 8 October 2026, the preparatory meeting for the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (PreCOP31) will take place in Nadi, Fiji, and in the neighbouring island nation of Tuvalu. The PreCOP brings together ministers, government representatives and other stakeholders to discuss key issues and potential compromises ahead of the actual UN Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Antalya, Turkey, in November.

Key topics at the PreCOP include climate finance, the role of the ocean in climate action, the empowerment of people and countries particularly affected by the climate crisis, and the question of how the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C can remain achievable.

For the first time, the preparatory meeting for the UN Climate Change Conference is not taking place at the venue of the actual UN Climate Change Conference itself, but – following a decision taken at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) last year – is being hosted in a broader format jointly by Australia, Fiji and Tuvalu in the Pacific – a region that is particularly severely affected by the consequences of the climate crisis. Be it rising sea levels, increasingly severe storms, droughts and floods, or the destruction of coral reefs: hardly anywhere else in the world, climate change is felt as strongly and for as a long time than in the Pacific.

The Pacific Island states are therefore among the greatest advocates for climate action within the United Nations and have been instrumental for may international processes, including, for example, the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion on Climate Change initiated by Vanuatu, and the UN Declaration on Sea-Level Rise adopted by the UN General Assembly at the end of September 2026.

On the occasion of the PreCOP, the United Nations Association of Germany, in cooperation with Misereor (Oceania Dialogue and Liaison Office), the Global Policy Forum Europe and the German Pacific Network, is hosting an online briefing with conference participants from Germany and the Pacific. The event will be held in English.
